GENERAL SCHOOL ASSISTANT-ELEMENTARY (K-5) - LIBRARY/MEDIA

I. ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:

Assists the library media specialist in coordinating the use of the building library media center and computer lab; assists with the building library media and information technology program under the direction of the library media specialist and the principal.

II. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:

Salary: On schedule
Length of contract:  184 days

III. POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Library Media Specialist, Principal
Coordinates with: Library Media Coordinator, Director of Technology, and teachers.
Supervises:  Students.

IV. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Required experience or training: high school diploma. 
  2. Desired experience: experience in a library; with Microsoft Office and other software programs; with computers and other equipment; in schools. 
  3. Special requirements of the position: Ability to: work well with students, staff, and parents; work independently; keep detailed, accurate records; requires good organizational skills and an orientation to providing service.

V. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Students and Staff
    1. Handles circulation in the library media center when the library media specialist is collaborating with teachers and team teaching to allow flexible scheduling.
    2. Handles circulation in the library media center before school, after school and during the lunch hour to offer extended service hours.
    3. Reads stories to students, help students select books to check out, assist students with finding sources for research.
    4. Assist library media specialist when teaching in the library media center or computer lab.
    5. Assists library media specialist with preparing bibliographies of resources and selecting carts of resources for teachers.
  2. Information Technology Support
    1. Assist library media specialist with staff development by helping participants.
    2. Assist with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, record keeping, for the library media and information technology program and technology committees.
    3. Handle registrations, agendas and record keeping for technology committees.
    4. Assist with troubleshooting computers and peripherals in classrooms, labs, and office. Send in equipment for repair. E-mail or call the help desk with problems.
    5. Package, tag, and send equipment to technicians for repair.
    6. Compile orders of resources selected by the media specialists.
    7. Assist with web publishing of the library media web page.
    8. Assist teachers in searching for appropriate Internet sites.
    9. 9. Email announcements, newsletters, etc.
  3. Library Automation System
    1. In-district interlibrary loan: Access Hold Alerts Report in daily. Gather books to be sent out. Reconcile holds. Package up resources, label and send in the school mail.
    2. Check in new items, add to "New Titles" list, apply book covers and genre labels.
    3. Check in periodicals, add holdings; delete holdings for withdrawn magazines.
    4. Check out, check in, inspect, maintain, and repair resources and equipment, run overdue lists, collect fines.
    5. Scan barcodes of resources to withdraw into email message and send to Media Services. Process withdrawn resources for proper removal.
    6. Assist library media specialist with inventory of the collection of resources annually.
  4. Operational Assistance
    1. Shelve resources daily.
    2. Assist library media specialist with training and supervising volunteers.
    3. Assist in rearrangement of the library media center and resources as needed.
    4. Assist with displays, decorating, dusting, cleaning, watering plants, etc.
    5. Assist with audiovisual services such as video recording school events and educational TV programs, charging batteries, replacing lamps, etc.
    6. Collect, distribute, file mail, route periodicals.
    7. Maintain supply lists; reorder as necessary.
  5. Perform other duties as directed by the building principal and administration.
