GENERAL SCHOOL ASSISTANT - SECONDARY

I. ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:

To provide support, workable knowledge, and skills to the position assigned in library, skill center or academic department; to work with staff and administration to further improve education of students in secondary schools. Depending upon assignment, assistant may take active role in duties necessary for the effective operation of library, provide typing and other clerical support to teachers, or administer tutoring program.

II. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:

Salary: On schedule
Length of contract:  184+10 or 194+11, as assigned

III. POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Building administrator(s)
Coordinates with: Building staff and students
Type of coordination:  As directed by administrator or others with coordination responsibilities

IV. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Desired experience and training: Graduation from high school; experience/training in word processing and/or computers; experience/training in other clerical tasks.
  2. Special requirements of the position: 
    1. Good communication skills, both oral and written. 
    2. Experience working with teenagers. 
    3. Knowledge of media and reference skills. 
    4. Flexibility/adaptability

V. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operates a variety of office machines, including computers
  2. Orders and processes material for area assigned
  3. Keeps records, maintains files and takes care of mail
  4. Types and handles correspondence as needed
  5. Answers phones and gives messages
  6. Checks material in and out
  7. Gathers and distributes regular and supplementary materials
  8. Maintains department collection and assists in maintenance of equipment
  9. Collects money (fines, etc)
  10. Supervises and assists students as needed
  11. Works with faculty to assist with material or projects
  12. Prepares reports
  13. Maintains pleasant environment with timely bulletin boards and displays
  14. Orders supplies and keeps inventory of them
  15. Depending upon assignment, may perform duties related to effective operation of library, smooth operation of department, or may administer tutoring program.
  16. Performs other tasks as assigned.
