NETWORK TECHNICIAN

I. ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:

The Network Technician will assist with the operations, troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment and software of the Eau Claire Area School District Network Operation Center.

Length of contract:  12 months

III. POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Network Manager
Coordinates with: Building Staff, District Staff
Recruited by: Executive Director of Technology

IV. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
    • Substantial experience in Network Operations.
  2. DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 
    • A working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000 workstation, Windows XP Professional and Windows NT and 2000 server environments. 
    • A working knowledge of Internet protocols (HTTP, TCP/IP, etc.) and tools (ping, traceroute, nslookup, etc…). 
    • At least two years experience supporting end-user networks in a Microsoft environment. 
    • A working knowledge of the following: IPSwitch WhatsUP Gold, Xerox Xcounter, Altiris Deployment Server, Veritas Backup Exec, Veritas Netbackup Datacenter. 
    • Familiar with the applications in Microsoft Office.
  3. GENERAL SKILLS: 
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
    • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. 
    • Ability to communicate clearly with individual computing users on all levels - in small groups, one on one, and in writing. 
    • Methodical attention to detail. 
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver multiple assignments on time, and maintain an efficient/timely daily work schedule. 
    • The ability to effectively document technical work.

V. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide early morning coverage of the Network Operation Center (NOC). ·
  • Ensure that trouble tickets closed or escalated promptly and intuitively ·
  • Ensure regularly scheduled technical tasks are accomplished on time. ·
  • Monitor server backups and backup tape rotation. ·
  • Analyze server event log files and investigate and correct or record errors that are discovered. ·
  • Monitor and maintain the Central Office and Elementary School print servers. ·
  • Clearly document features, technical specifications, technical work and job processes. ·
  • Monitor industry trends, technologies, and standards. ·
  • Research, recommend, and apply new technologies as they emerge. ·
  • Assist school staff with staff and student network account creation and trouble-shooting. ·
  • Act as backup to the Help Desk. ·
  • Provide additional support for Network Operations and Information Technology Department as directed by Network Manager. ·
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
