PAYROLL AND BENEFITS CLERK

I. ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:

Under limited supervision, to provide assistance in preparation and processing of payrolls; to tabulate and record employee absences; and to perform related work as required.

II. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:

Salary: On schedule
Length of contract:  12 months

III. POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance, Director of Finance
Coordinates with: Business Department personnel, data processing, district staff
Type of coordination:  As directed by administrator or others with coordination responsibilities

IV. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Desired training and experience: Completion of an accounting/bookkeeping program from a technical school or college; recent responsible bookkeeping work experience, preferably including payroll processing; experience/training in word processing and/or computers.
  2. Special requirements of the position:
    1. Knowledge of state and departmental payroll policies and procedures. 
    2. Knowledge of federal and state reporting requirements. 
    3. Ability to prepare and reconcile payroll summaries. 
    4. Ability to understand and interpret leave programs and policies. 
    5. Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees. 
    6. Ability to develop and maintain work deadlines. 
    7. Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy. 
    8. Possesses effective human relations skills.

V. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepares input for data processing of biweekly payroll of substitute teachers.
  2. Records all employee absences and distributes statements and notices pertaining to sick leave, payroll, insurance, retirement, and other related materials.
  3. Files general payroll and information and records.
  4. Sorts payroll for distribution.
  5. Records bond deductions, purchases bonds, and records serial numbers.
  6. Interprets applications of sick leave and vacation.
  7. Computes costs of contracts and performs other payroll and related work as needed.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.
